Last year's major logistics project at Nordic Nest in Kalmar has not only been a large and 'vitally important' project for the client, but it has also been one of ITO PallPack's biggest installations to date.
Transport and Environmental Benefits
The logistics center of Nordic Nest in Kalmar dates back to 2019, with earlier expansions in both 2021 and 2022. Last year's expansions consist of over a thousand meters of conveyor belts, a new sorting plant, and six Jivaro packing machines. When we talk to Johan Torudd during the busiest period of the year – Black Week 2023, he tells us that there are still some minor adjustments to be made, but all Autostore orders are now expedited through the facility.
– This is a 'vitally important' investment for us, both in terms of competitiveness, efficiency, and growth opportunities. In the previous project, we focused on streamlining picking, while the goal of this project has been to streamline the packing of orders. The ITO facility enables us to handle even more orders per day, with lower costs per order than before. At the same time, we achieve transport and environmental benefits by using Jivaro packing machines from Savoye, where each box is cut down so that it contains minimal air, says Johan Torudd, Operations Developer Lead at Nordic Nest.
Up to 25,000 Orders per Day. In total, Nordic Nest has 6 Jivaro machines from the French company Savoye, which pack in three different carton sizes (footprints) and with two different carton lids.
– Here at Nordic Nest, we have goods from two different brands; Nordic Nest and Svenssons, and we want the brand to be clearly visible on the outside of each order. The lids are delivered ready with a logo and some other printed information directly from our cardboard supplier. With six Jivaro machines, we get the flexibility to use different carton formats, and at the same time, the capacity to handle the busiest periods. Black Week is the busiest period of the year, where we handle up to 25,000 orders a day, so right now it goes for 15-16 hours a day, tells Johan.
– This has undoubtedly been a gigantic project for both ITO Pallpack and for Nordic Nest. In fact, we have found that the Norwegian and Swedish ITO employees have been just as engaged as our own staff throughout the entire project. Of course, it has not been without challenges, but we had not expected it to be. All in all, we are very satisfied, and we feel confident that the high expectations here in our own organization will be met, concludes a satisfied and optimistic Johan Torudd from the logistics center in Kalmar."
